Introduction

The University of Transkei (UNITRA) — now Walter Sisulu University — has a rich history of fostering musical talent through its choir. As former members, we have established the UNITRA Choir Legacy to preserve and enhance this esteemed legacy.

Who We Are

The UNITRA Choir Legacy is a non-profit organization dedicated to institutionalizing yearly reunions, engaging in local and international festivals, and highlighting the choir's historical importance.

  • Walter Sisulu University — music training for historically disadvantaged individuals.
  • Schools & rural communities — participating in traditional festivals and transforming raw talent into professional artistry.

To be a leading non-profit organization in the promotion of choral music, inspiring future generations and honoring the legacy of the UNITRA Choir.

Historical Background

Established in 1987, the UNITRA Choir promoted choral music across South Africa, attracting members from all faculties. It became a unifying force for student activism, providing musical education and instilling ethical values.

Purpose & Objectives

Core Activities

  • Engage actively in local and international music festivals.
  • Partner with WSU Alumni Committee to enhance cultural initiatives.
  • Reinstate community initiatives: scholarships, conductor training, opera development, and adjudication.
  • Form partnerships with Jazz Against Apartheid and other arts organizations to promote Chora-Jazz in the Eastern Cape.

Achievements

  • Participated in SATICA, TRACA, and Old Mutual National Choir Festival.
  • 1995 — cultural exchange with Germany, training at Richard Wagner Music Festival, contributing to an archive of African music.

Organizational Structure

Board

Five directors and patrons (Non-Executive Directors).

Executive Committee

Elected former members: Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer, PRO.

Sub‑committees

Event planning, fundraising, alumni engagement.

UNITRA Choir Legacy

All former members (since 1987) — non‑refundable monthly fee R300.

Associate Members

Non‑singing members with same benefits and fee R300/month; participate in sub‑committees.

Implementation Plan

1. Establishment Governing board & legal NPO status.
2. Event Planning Biennial gatherings and festivals.
First festival: WSU Main Campus (launch).
Upcoming: South Korea (dependent on funding).
3. Marketing Promotional materials, digital presence, community engagement.

Resources & Budget

Member contributions: minimum non‑refundable R300/month.

Alternative funding: charitable donations, sponsorships, fundraising.

A comprehensive financial strategy ensures transparency and accountability.
